New York and Back in 30 hours: Recapping Islanders Mini Camp

By Tom Matthews

Stand still traffic, 20 listens of “Despacito” (Justin Bieber’s summer jam, also Eric Lindquist’s new favorite song), two stops at Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria later and we successfully completed our trip to Long Island for the Isles mini camp.

50 prospects hit the ice at the Northwell Health Ice Center Tuesday morning, including recent drafts Sebastian Aho, Robin Salo, Ben Mirageas, Arnaud Durandeau, and Logan Cockerill. Out of those 50 prospects, expect to see four or five playing for the Railers sometime during the 2017-18 season.

Over the course of the couple hours of camp on Tuesday we saw 3 on 3 sessions, shooting drills, workouts, and a media address from head coach Doug Weight.

Now, we patiently await to see which prospects will end up playing in Worcester.

While planning the trip to Long Island, Eric Lindquist made sure to plan a pit stop at the original Frank Pepe’s in New Haven, CT. He claimed it would be the “best pizza I’ve ever had in my life.” And, well, needless to say, we made more than one pit stop. Two to be exact. One on the way to Long Island, and one on the way back home. Right now, at 23 years old, I can say it was the best pizza I’ve had in my life. I’m young, though. There’s lots of pizza to be had. I do, however, know that whenever I find myself in New Haven, CT I will be making a stop at Frank Pepe’s. Below, you can watch a time-lapse video of us devouring a large pizza, because what else would you want to do with your valuable time?

I want to extend a big thank you to the Islanders organization for inviting us down, showing us around, and giving us access to everything.

Below, watch a full recap including interviews with GM/Head Coach Jamie Russell, Assistant Coach Terry Bangen, on ice action, and a media address from Islanders Head Coach Doug Weight.
