26 Ways to Gain a Playoff Spot this Weekend

There are 26 ways the Worcester Railers can gain the final spot in the Kelly Cup Playoffs in the last weekend of the regular season. This is out of a possible 64 ways that the upcoming weekend against the Adirondack Thunder can end. The Railers head to Glen Falls to secure an important milestone in Railers franchise history – a second playoff appearance and the next step towards bringing the Kelly Cup home to Worcester.

The Railers play in Glens Falls, NY this Saturday against Adirondack at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 3:00 p.m. The Worcester Railers currently sit one point ahead of the Thunder, who have one game in hand and will play Friday night in Trois-Rivieres Quebec before returning to Glens Falls to face the Railers. Worcester currently has 72 points in the standings, one more than Adirondack at 71.

Including only scenarios in which the Thunder win their game against the Trois-Rivieres Lions on Friday, Worcester makes the playoffs 10 out of 32 times. Of the scenarios in which the Thunder lose to the Lions in regulation or overtime, Worcester makes the playoffs in 16 out of 32 scenarios.

The most straight forward paths to the playoffs include the Railers winning both games on Saturday and Sunday in regulation or overtime, regardless of if Adirondack wins on Friday. If the Thunder lose on Friday at Trois Rivieres, then Worcester would need to win just one game in regulation on Saturday or Sunday to clinch their spot.

The most convoluted scenarios include Adirondack winning on Friday in overtime, before Worcester grabs a regulation win on either Saturday or Sunday, with Adirondack winning the other weekend game in overtime. These scenarios see Worcester and Adirondack tied in points at 75 each. It would then go to the first tiebreaker, which is regulation wins. Both teams would be tied at 27, sending it to the second tiebreaker. Worcester would own the second tiebreaker of Regulation + Overtime wins, 33-30 and ultimately move ahead. These are the only scenarios in which the second tiebreaker would be utilized.

The Railers are 8-7 against Adirondack this season. Should the Railers clinch, it will be their second ever appearance in the Kelly Cup Playoffs. The team entered the first round of playoffs in their inaugural 2017-18 season. The first round would begin at home with three games at the DCU Center on Wed., April 19th, Fri., April 21st, and Sat April 22nd. All games would have a 7:05 p.m. puck drop.
