McGuire Wire – August 22 – A Week in Review

Hey Railers fans, Cam McGuire here checking in! I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy and is ready for an awesome weekend. The Railers had another busy week: we partnered with Art Reach for a week of hockey themed art activities, signed another player, and saw a lot of movement in our Stanley Cup Playoffs Bracket Challenge rankings with round one in the books. Let’s check it all out!

Recap of Railers Art Week

With support from People’s United Bank, we partnered with ArtReach Studio for a week of hockey themed art activities as part of our community Summer Series. We got to see Railers COO, Mike Myers, draw TRAX and talk about the evolution of goalie masks and hockey sticks. Darcy from ArtReach taught us how to draw a portrait and how to tie-dye a t-shirt!

Joel Kocur Signing

On Thursday, the Railers announced the signing of rookie forward Joel Kocur. Kocur spent the last four seasons at American International College (AIC) where he played an instrumental role in turning around their hockey program. The Yellow Jackets went from having only eight wins his freshman season to making the NCAA Tournament during his junior season, defeating the number one overall seed, St. Cloud State; Kocur scored the first goal of the game.

“Joel comes from a strong hockey family and has a lot of knowledge of the game,” Railers GM/HC David Cunniff said. “He improved each year at AIC and will be a strong asset for our team because he’s a versatile player that checks off a lot of boxes for us.”

I had the chance to speak with Joel via Zoom earlier in the week. We discussed his off-season in his hometown of Edson, his rich family hockey history, and his hockey career at AIC.

PRESS RELEASE

Railers Stanley Cup Playoffs Bracket Challenge

I’m going to preface this paragraph by saying I am not happy with my bracket’s performance. As I began to write this Friday afternoon six of the eight first round series had already wrapped up, with Philadelphia looking to close things out vs. Montreal and a Vancouver win Friday night would push them to round two. Friday afternoon I was operating at 50%, having correctly picked only three of the first six match-ups in Round 1. I’m not the greatest at math, but I do know that 50% is no bueno. HOWEVER, the hockey gods were in my favor Friday night with the Philadelphia and Vancouver win I’m currently 5/8… 62.5% is still not great but I’m pretty sure that’s a passing grade?

We had great participation in our league, with over 100 entries from Railers members, players, fans and staff.  There are only FIVE perfect brackets through round one, and NICK FRANK is currently leading the way… Nick if you are reading this I know you are cheating and I will find out your tricks. There is a log jam in the rest of the leaderboard.. check it out below! I will continue to provide updates as the NHL playoffs progress, so stay tuned!

BRACKET UPDATE

I hope you enjoy the weekend… the weather looks awesome! I’m already looking forward to checking in next week.

Until next time, so long.
