Why Monkey Wrenches?
The monkey wrench was invented in Worcester by Loring Coes and the Coes Wrench Company in 1840. During the height of the industrial era from the 1860s through the early 1900s, monkey wrenches became the dominant form of adjustable wrench and were manufactured in large quantities by Coes family partnerships and licensees. The company continued to innovate throughout the 19th century, filing numerous wrench patents. In 1909, the Coes Wrench Company even advertised a six-foot-long “key” wrench for use on railroads - connecting Worcester’s invention directly to the spirit of the Railers. Monkey Wrenches Weekend is a celebration of Worcester’s ingenuity, history, and lasting impact on industry.
