Railers Fall to Growlers 3-1 Loss on Sunday Afternoon

Osmanski nets third of the season for Railers

St. John’s, NL– The Worcester Railers HC (29-28-4-2, 64pts) lost to the Newfoundland Growlers (38-16-6-2, 84pts) on Saturday night by the final score of 3-1 in front of a crowd of 2,959 at the Mary Brown’s Centre. The Railers are back in Worcester, MA at the DCU Center on Wednesday, April 6th to take on the Trois-Rivieres Lions at 7:05 p.m.

Newfoundland came out hot in the first period, as they have all weekend long, and took a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Austin Osmanski (1-0-1) finally broke through for the Railers early in the second to put Worcester on the board for the first time all weekend. Neither team managed to score the rest of the game however, as the Railers dropped their third straight game to the Growlers by a final score of 3-1.

It didn’t take long for Newfoundland to grab the early lead, as Ben Finkelstein (11th) found the back of the net just 84 seconds into the game. Finkelstein came down the right side during four-on-four play and unleashed a wrister on Ellis. Ellis made the save, but Finkelstein crashed in and grabbed the rebound, finishing past Ellis to put the Growlers up 1-0. Worcester went on the power play midway through the period as James Melindy committed a hooking penalty at 7:19 into the first. Worcester generated a couple of shots and a few good looks on the man advantage, but couldn’t break through as the game remained 1-0 Newfoundland. Later in the period, the Growlers converted on two separate up-ice rushes to make it a 3-0 hockey game. First, Tyler Welsh (1st) grabbed a rebound off of the left pad of Colten Ellis after a blast from Todd Skirving, ripping it past the netminder to make it 2-0 Newfoundland. 2:50 later, Todd Skirving (18th) took an odd angle shot along the far goal line and snuck one past Ellis to put the Growlers up 3-0 heading into the second period. Worcester outshot Newfoundland 9-8 through the first 20 minutes.

It was Austin Osmanski (3rd) early in the second who finally got the Railers on the board for the first time all weekend. The defenseman released a wrist shot from the right point with nobody in front, and beat Angus Redmond in net for the Growlers glove side to make it a 3-1 game. The Railers had two separate power play chances in the second, but failed to capitalize on either one, as the period came to a close with a score of 3-1. Shots in the period favored the Railers 11-10, as Worcester outshot Newfoundland 20-18 through two periods.

Worcester again found themselves with multiple power play chances in the period, but didn’t score on either look. Both Ellis and Redmond stayed strong throughout the entirety of the third period, as neither allowed a goal for the entirety of the frame. The final horn would sound, giving Newfoundland the 3-1 victory on Sunday afternoon. Worcester outshot Newfoundland 11-8 in the third, and 31-26 on the game.
